Role explainer
What does a communications consultant do?
A communications consultant helps organizations decide what to say, to whom and through which channels, then guides how those messages are delivered and measured.
The CCO Guide, published by Beltway Media, explains the communications consultant role for people hiring one and people considering the career. At Beltway Media, the most senior form of the role is the fractional Chief Communications Officer, who owns strategy, messaging, media relations and stakeholder communications for client organizations on a defined schedule.

What does a strategic communications consultant do?
A strategic communications consultant connects messaging to organizational goals. The work typically includes auditing current communications, mapping audiences, defining positioning and messages, advising executives, guiding media relations and measuring whether communications changed perceptions or behavior.
Corporate communication itself manages how an organization speaks to employees, investors, customers, media, regulators and the public. A consultant brings outside perspective and senior judgment to that work.
Consultant, strategist, manager or CCO: how do the roles differ?
| Role | Main focus | Typical outputs | Seniority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communications consultant | Advice and projects for clients | Audits, plans, messaging, counsel | Mid to senior |
| Communication strategist | Designing the plan | Positioning, messages, channel plans, measures | Mid to senior |
| Strategic communications manager | Running the plan in-house | Campaigns, coordination, reporting | Mid |
| Chief Communications Officer | Owning the narrative | Strategy, executive counsel, crisis leadership | Executive |
| Fractional CCO | Owning the narrative part time | Same as CCO, on a defined schedule | Executive |
What are the top 3 communication skills?
Listening, clear writing and confident speaking top most lists. At the executive level, judgment joins them: knowing what to say, what not to say and when to take a clear position.
Two classic checklists help. The 3 C's of communication are usually clear, concise and consistent. The 7 C's are clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous. Beltway Media's Four Languages Model adds a channel lens: how audiences read, see, hear and experience a message.
What is a corporate communications consulting salary?
It depends on seniority, location, sector and employer type, and this guide does not repeat salary figures without a published source. For official, regularly updated median pay, use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:
- Public relations specialists
- Public relations and fundraising managers
- Management analysts, which includes many strategy consultants
The highest paying job in communication is typically the executive role: Chief Communications Officer or head of corporate affairs. Strategy consulting is generally considered well paid, especially at large firms. McKinsey does not publish a fixed entry-level salary; check its recruiting materials and university career center offer reports.
How hard is it to get into strategy or communications consulting?
Strategy consulting is competitive. McKinsey, BCG and Bain are usually described as the hardest to get into, with multi-round case interviews. Communications consulting follows a different path: experience in journalism, public relations, government or corporate communications often matters more.
Beltway Media's Managing Director is an example of that path: a multimedia journalist at The Hill before founding the firm, with a Georgetown M.A. in Communication, Culture and Technology and a George Washington University B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Will consulting be replaced by AI?
AI is changing consulting more than replacing it. According to StrategyU, BCG's headline number is that AI and tech work is now more than 40% of its revenue, with AI services up 25% in 2025.
Beltway Media's view is that AI makes execution cheap and pushes content toward the safe middle, so the human parts of the job, judgment, editorial standards and a defensible point of view, become the differentiators. More in the communications strategy consulting guide.
Questions about the consultant role
What does a strategic communications person do?
A strategic communications professional connects messaging to organizational goals rather than producing content in isolation. They identify audiences, define what each needs to hear, choose channels and measure whether communications changed perceptions or behavior. At the senior level this means advising executives on risk, product, investment and talent decisions, which Beltway Media describes as central to the Chief Communications Officer role.
What is a corporate communications consulting salary?
Pay depends on seniority, location, sector and whether the consultant works at a firm, independently or in-house. This guide does not cite salary figures without a published source. For current, sourced ranges, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes median pay for public relations specialists and for public relations and fundraising managers, and updates it regularly.
What is a strategic communications salary?
Strategic communications salaries range from early-career specialist pay to executive compensation for heads of communications, and vary by sector, city and employer size. Government, nonprofit and corporate roles often pay differently. This guide does not invent figures; the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes official median pay for public relations specialists and managers, the closest federal job categories.
How much do strategy consultants get paid?
Strategy consultant pay varies by firm, city and level, and published figures change every recruiting cycle. Large management consulting firms generally pay more than boutiques at entry level. This guide does not list salaries without a published source; check firms' own career pages, offer data from university career centers, or the BLS entry for management analysts.
Is strategy consulting high paying?
Strategy consulting is generally considered well paid compared with many early-career professional jobs, particularly at large global firms, though hours and travel can be demanding. Pay rises with promotion through analyst, consultant, manager and partner levels. For official figures, the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes median pay for management analysts, the federal category that includes many consultants.
What is McKinsey's entry-level salary?
McKinsey does not publish a fixed entry-level salary, and figures vary by office, degree and year, so this guide does not repeat unsourced numbers. The most reliable sources are McKinsey's own recruiting materials, university career center reports that publish graduate offer data, and recent hires. McKinsey is a management consulting firm; communications consulting roles follow a different pay structure.
How hard is it to get into strategy consulting?
It is competitive. Large firms recruit heavily from target universities and MBA programs and rely on case interviews that test structured problem solving. Smaller firms and boutiques may weigh industry experience more. For communications consulting, a track record in journalism, public relations, government or corporate communications often matters more than case interview performance.
Will consulting be replaced by AI?
AI is changing consulting more than replacing it. StrategyU reports BCG's headline number that AI and tech work is now more than 40% of its revenue, with AI services up 25% in 2025. Beltway Media's view is that AI commoditizes execution such as producing volume content, while human judgment, editorial standards and a clear point of view become the differentiators.
